Personality

Personality Blog

The debate over nature and nurture personalities looks at how people get their personalities. Those who think it is by nature believe that a person inherits the personalities when they are born from the genes of their parents. However of the other hand people who believe personality is to do with nurture believe that the personality a person has is a result of the environment, education and culture they belong to and not inheritance from parents. Both ways have a good argument however there are some who believe in both methods play a part in personalities.

I believe that they both play a part in a person’s personality as some personalities are inherited and can be seen as the individual would act similarly to their parents in some way, however the way that the person is bought up also plays a part as to fit in to plays people change and adopt new personalities. I believe that everyone has the ability to learn different types of personalities to suit different things and places. However if I was to choose out of the two I think that nurture plays a bigger part as even though some personalities may be seen as similar to parents but other personalities can be learnt through the environment that you are in.

Laurie J. Mullins (2010) suggests that Nomothetic is a said to be a measurable and specific way that looks at individuals personalities. The Nomothetic approach suggests that it is possible to test and measure people’s personality as well as predict how individuals would react to a certain situation. Many organisations can use this to conduct tests to see whether the personality of a person is good or bad and also find out which person reacts better in certain situations, this would then help managers to recruit and select the correct people for jobs available in the organisations.

Laurie J. Mullins (2010) also states that Idiographic on the other hand is particularly looking at the uniqueness of each individual and what they can provide to an organisation to put them above the rest of the applicants. This approach believes that personalities are open to change as an individual would change their personality to meet the standard set in different places; this is affected by the different environment and the different people that are associated with the individual. This therefore suggests that the personality will change to fit in with changes made to the individual’s lifestyle. It also believes that personality cannot be measured to show uniqueness where as nomothetic does.

This is my personality test results and show interesting results although personally I feel that I’m more open than the results show, so tests like these may not be very reliable in determining mine and other peoples personality traits.

To conclude I have found out that there are different beliefs in the way people get their personality, however I also think that there is no right or wrong answer as both nature and nurture personalities play a part in an individual’s personality. From the test conducted I feel that personality tests can be somewhat accurate however that is just for me and other peoples test may be inaccurate and therefore I think that they are still unreliable in most cases and shouldn’t be used to judge a person’s personality.
